Where We've Been
Author and poet Nikki Grimes shared her new book, Barack Obama: Son of Promise, Child of Hope, at a CLN Conversation on July 11th. Looking at the galley with illustrations by Bryan Collier, and listening to Nikki read out loud, members were able to ask questions about the way this book was created. Nikki also talked about book promotion, which participants found fascinating. Pictured, clockwise around the table starting in the lower right: Heather Bouwman, Laura Salas, Loretta Ellsworth, Jane Hoffman, Nikki Grimes, Faythe Thureen. (posted 22 July 08)

In the News
"As it turns out, having my book published as Y.A. wasn’t such a shame after all." Read this article by Margo Raab in the New York Times online, Sunday Book Review, 20 July 2008. With provocative comments by an author whose book is purchased by Random House Books for Children ("My literary novel about death and grief, which I’d worked on for eight years, was a young adult book?"), other "adult" authors published in the YA field weigh in on the field in "I'm YA, and I'm OK." Vermont College of Fine Arts
It's official. The academic institution which is home to the MFA in Writing for Children and Young Adults on the East Coast is once again on secure ground. At one time facing an uncertain future as owner Union Institute and University debated what do with the program, the news is all good. The three MFA programs based at 174-year-old Vermont College (Writing and Visual Arts are the other two) are now independent, operating as Vermont College of Fine Arts, and they are fully accredited. Vermont College of Fine Arts is the only institution of its kind—a low-residency graduate school devoted exclusively to fine arts education. Faculty in this MFA program, including Marion Dane Bauer, Tim Wynne-Jones, Jane Kurtz, Kathi Appelt, Cynthia Leitich-Smith, Rita Williams-Garcia, and David Gifaldi, are gearing up for their summer residency in mid-July.
