Susan Taylor Brown was born on July 21st, in Concord, California. She rode horses, competed in roller-skating, and read a lot of books. She also wrote all the time. Susan graduated from the same high school as her mother and grandmother, which gives a person roots. She married and had two children, who are both grown now. In the late '90s, after a divorce, Susan moved to Virginia and then New Orleans, where she wrote for newspapers and magazines, including a weekly column in the New Orleans Times-Picayune. In 1998, Susan returned to California. She lives in San Jose with her second husband, Erik, and Cassie, the German Shepherd they are training to be a therapy dog.
Susan has written more than forty books for educational publishers, including the recent Enrique Esparza and the Battle of the Alamo. Her award-winning verse novel, Hugging the Rock, is about a girl whose mother leaves and whose father is emotionally distant. She wrote Oliver's Must-do List, a picture book about a little boy who teaches his mother to play and enjoy life. An early book of Susan's was Can I Pray With My Eyes Open, reflecting the questions a child asks about prayer.
