Rebecca Kai Dotlich is a poet and picture book author whose work has been featured on Reading Rainbow, and has appeared in magazines such as Ladybug, Highlights, and Click, as well as in numerous anthologies, textbooks and collections. She is a frequent speaker and promoter of poetry at conferences and workshops around the country to writers, teachers, librarians and children.

Rebecca grew up in Indianapolis, Indiana, the middle child of three. Most of the books she remembers being in her home were fairy tales and condensed Reader’s Digest compilations. Her brother read Mad magazines, but she preferred Archie and Lulu. There was also a coveted set of small orange biographies and later, the Nancy Drew and Hardy Boys books. Since there was not a library in walking distance, and her mother didn’t drive, the bookmobile arrived two blocks down, every two weeks, which was a real adventure. Even better than walking to the A&P for rock candy.

Today, she is a word-keeper-collector, and has a shelf of word journals and notebooks that she dips into frequently.

Rebecca is the mother of two grown children, and the grandmother of two very small ones. She lives with her husband in Indiana.

Castles: Old Stone Poems
by J. Patrick Lewis and Rebecca Kai Dotlich
illustrated by Dan Burr
Wordsong, Boyds Mills Press, 2006
ISBN 978-1-59078-380-1

Castles are monumental, in real life and in our imaginations. They represent the power—and folly—of kings and queens. They are magnificent in their glory and splendor, and in their destruction. From the castle keep to dungeons, from the battlements to the moat, they evoke equally tales of honor and infamy, grandeur and despair. They symbolize the best and worst of human aspirations. The legends that surround them are the stuff of dreams.

In these old stone poems, Rebecca Kai Dotlich and J. Patrick Lewis explore the castles of history—and fantasy—that have fascinated people for hundreds of years. Blending fact and fiction, history and fantasy, they capture the wonder that castles evoke in young and old alike. Dan Burr's vibrant paintings light up the pages while depicting the humanity of these monuments. Included are Medieval Minutes, filled with facts and legends; a timeline that places the castles in historical perspective; and a bibliography.
