"Just bloom where you're planted" could have been Mackie d'Arge's own motto. She was born in Panama City, Panama, and moved from there to Turkey and then on to Greece, Morocco, and Italy. She studied dress design in Switzerland and then Fine Arts in Florence and Paris. From there she moved to southern France, then to Crete and on to Sri Lanka, Hawaii, India, and back to France. She was 34 when she settled in Wyoming on a windblown, rundown ranch on the snowy side of a mountain. There she raised two sons as she learned the ins and outs and ups and downs of ranching. Now the boys are raised and she lives on a ranch on the Wind River Indian Reservation in Wyoming.

Mackie is known in Wyoming for her appliqué collages. Writing is something she recently took up to see if she could use the other side of her brain. Now she's amazed and delighted to announce that her book, Lifting the Sky, has been published by Bloomsbury.

Blue's mother has always said, "Just bloom where you're planted." And i's a good motto for a girl who's moved around as much as Blue has. Then her mom gets hired to run a tumbledown ranch and, for the first time, Blue finds herself unpacking in a place she longs to call home.

But it's more than the ranch that makes Blue feel excited. It's exploring the forbidden lands beyond the ranch with her faithful dog, Stew Pot. It's rescuing a lame antelope fawn and watching two orphaned calves respond to her touch—a healing gift her mom says she got from her long-gone dad. And it's discovering a friend in a boy who drives her crazy—that is, when he isn't making her heart race.

So when a surprise visitor threatens to uproot them, the girl who's used to blooming anywhere will need to choose between her dream of being in a family and taking root in the only place that's ever felt like home.
