  Padma Venkatraman

Magazine Article Merits Award

Padma Venkatraman, a new member of CLN, has won the SCBWI Magazine Merit Award for 2007 in the the nonfiction category. Her article, "The Power of Peace," published in the October 2007 issue of Faces magazine, is about the Indian independence movement led by Mahatma Gandhi. Venkatraman's young adult novel, Climbing the Stairs (Penguin-Putnam), which debuts in May, is also set during this period. Climbing the stairs is the story of fifteen-year-old Vidya, struggling to find her place in a mixed-up world: a world that is fighting a violent war and also, at the same time, witnessing the first nationwide nonviolent freedom movement.
